Summary

Teenagers across the U.S. are vastly uneducated about menstrual and sexual health. Due to failure of schools to provide comprehensive, effective sex education and the awkward nature that inhibits parents and children to talk about sexual health, they are left to self-educate; teens take to the internet, plagued with misinformation, contradicting answers, and overwhelming amounts of content, and their friends, who hardly know much more than they do.

Locket is a mobile application that aims to be the modern health pocket encyclopedia built for young adults, by young adults. Our team wants to turn scientifically-backed, medically-approved information into easy-to-understand, engaging educational content for teens to get quick answers to their real questions. Additionally, our platform plans to implement live support service via a chatline that connects users to real young adults, equipped with the right information.

User Research

Locket’s target users are menstruators ages 15-19 that want accurate information about menstrual and sexual health. Below is a breakdown of the key user insights we derived from this most recent round of interviews.

Themes

  • Finding friends/ roommates in college that they feel comfortable talking to about sex is easier.

  • When talking to friends about sex, the sexual experiences of friends give them credibility, even over the strength of the friendship.

  • Conversations are not always about getting answers but just hearing from someone who can relate makes them feel better.

  • Moms are used as a resource to talk to about period related problems and questions but not sex.

  • Google is a common resource for users to seek answers to questions. Users do not specifically use any other websites to find information. Rather, they just see what sites pop up for their specific inquiry. Even if answers are the same across multiple websites (which is fairly uncommon), users still do not necessarily feel “satisfied” after their internet searches. They are afraid that they might be an exception to what the internet says.

  • Recall elementary school presentations about menstrual health and health class for sexual health, but did not learn much.

  • Would rather listen/watch videos than read.

  • Users only seek specific information, but do not explore menstrual and sexual health information.

  • Users enjoy listening to other people’s stories and real experiences..

Pain Points

  • No close friends or family to share concerns and experiences with

  • Contradicting answers and misinformation on the internet

  • Overwhelming amount of content on search engines

  • Lack of confidence even after searching the internet
